Packaging & Cartons

The Strength and Power of Printed Packaging

No matter the product, packaging is what sells it. Time and again, packaging — through both its design and functionality — communicates everything a consumer needs to know about the product inside and the brand behind it.

We all judge products by their packaging and marketing. In many cases, a consumer gives a product less than a minute before deciding whether to engage or move on. That first visual and tactile impression must create an immediate reaction. This is why so much time, thought, and investment goes into getting packaging right — often at a cost higher than the product itself.

From retail shelves and shop floors to e-commerce platforms, packaging is constantly competing for attention. Getting it right is not optional — it is critical to sales success.

What Are the Purposes of Packaging?

Packaging generally serves two core purposes:

  • Protecting and securing the product for storage, transport, and handling
  • Marketing the product to the consumer

Both are equally important and must work together.

Product Structure Matters

The type and weight of board used, as well as the way a box opens and closes, play a vital role in both the consumer experience and the structural integrity of the packaging. The correct structure ensures the product remains protected and intact, minimising damage and wastage.

Well-designed packaging must also be easy to transport, store, and handle — both for retailers and for the end consumer.

Typical Boards Used in Packaging

Folding Boxboard (FBB) and Solid Bleached Sulphate (SBS) boards are industry staples, particularly in pharmaceuticals, food, cosmetics, and luxury goods. They are valued for their excellent print quality, structural strength, and superior folding properties. Available in various weights, these boards are known for their high whiteness and premium finish.

Grey- and brown-backed Kraft boards, such as Valkraft and Valkote, are popular in South Africa as cost-effective alternatives. They are commonly used for food packaging, cake boxes, industrial applications (including automotive), point-of-sale displays, and some pharmaceutical packaging.

For heavier products such as tools, pumps, and appliances, a more robust solution is required. Fluted corrugated board, mounted with printed and laminated liners and finished with glued or stapled seams, provides the necessary strength.

  • E-flute (±1.5 mm): Ideal for high-quality, lightweight cartons
  • B-flute (±3 mm): Standard for general and medium-weight consumer items
  • C-flute (±3.5–4.0 mm): Commonly used for e-commerce and shipping cartons due to its stacking strength and protective qualities

These larger packaging formats also provide excellent opportunities for bold branding and messaging.

Packaging as a Marketing Tool

Packaging design communicates brand identity, conveys the perceived value of the product, and creates an experience — even before the product is opened. A well-known example is Apple, which has turned packaging into an integral part of the customer experience.

Packaging also delivers essential product information without requiring the consumer to open the box and plays a crucial role in differentiating a product from its competitors. Design choices must always align with the industry, target market, and consumer expectations — as they can make or break the buying decision.

Finishes that enhance Packaging

When it comes to packaging, detail matters. Special finishes elevate packaging and help products stand out in competitive environments.

  • Matt Lamination: Soft, refined, and sophisticated — ideal for luxury goods, cosmetics, and premium products. It also adds strength and protection.
  • Gloss Lamination: Shiny and reflective, offering a modern, eye-catching finish while providing durability.
  • Embossing / Debossing: Creates a raised or recessed 3D texture that adds tactile appeal.
  • Foiling: Metallic or special-effect foils applied to selected areas for a luxurious finish, commonly used in premium chocolates, perfumes, and wine packaging.
  • Spot UV Coating: A high-gloss varnish applied to specific design elements. When combined with matt lamination, it creates striking contrast and visual impact.

In Conclusion

Packaging is not an option — it is a critical part of any product’s lifecycle. It protects the product, ensures it arrives in perfect condition, and acts as a silent salesperson, communicating value and persuading the consumer to buy.
